Rebuilding Your Smile with Ridge Augmentation
When you lose a tooth, either through periodontal disease, extraction, or injury, your jaw bone recedes and your gums shrink. Missing teeth leave unsightly indentations, and can even affect how your dental prosthesis looks and fits. If you have a crown and bridge or partial dentures, you may find that they are slipping, or that they no longer conform to your gum line.
The natural contour of your smile can be rebuilt with ridge augmentation. With this procedure, the dentist can bolster gum-line dents and other deformities. Ridge augmentation is also used to prepare your jaw for a dental implant.
What's involved with this out-patient surgical process? Accomplished with local anesthesia, the dentist applies bone graft material in the indentation, covers it with gum tissue, and secures the augmentation with sutures. The dentist may then add a spacer over the graft in order to maintain the appropriate width and height so that new bone can grow. Once the socket completely heals, the dental implant can be placed or the crown and bridge re-fitted.
