Recognizing Early Signs of Oral Cancer Saves Lives
It's estimated that oral cancer kills one person every hour. Only half of those diagnosed with the disease live past five years, which makes the death rate for this disease higher than other more well-known cancerous conditions such as cervical cancer or Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The people most at risk for oral cancer are heavy tobacco and alcohol users. Three out of four diagnosed oral cancer victims smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or do both extensively.
When you go in for your regular dental check-up, your dentist will inspect your mouth for early signs of cancer, which can appear anywhere in your oral cavity as white spots, lumps, lesions, or unusual bleeding. A persistent hoarseness or difficulty swallowing may also be symptoms of oral cancer.
