Canker sores, also known as the medical condition aphthous stomatitis, are painful open lesions that appear anywhere on the mouth or gums. A canker sore begins as a tingling or burning sensation that progresses to a red spot or bump. It then becomes a white or yellow circle with an inflamed border.
The exact cause of canker sores isn't known, but the most common trigger seems to be trauma to the mouth--such as overaggressive brushing, accidentally biting, cuts incurred by sharp foods (such as potato chips) or by dental braces. And the following may also contribute to their appearance:
- Citrus fruits
- Physical trauma
- Stress
- Insomnia
- Food allergies
- Eating disorders
- Immune system reactions
- Vitamin deficiencies
