It's estimated that bad breath is the third most frequent reason patients seek out dental treatment. Roughly 25% of cases are classified as persistent halitosis-meaning the condition is chronic or an indication of serious illness. However, the biggest reason for bad breath is poor oral hygiene.
The main cause of bad breath is sulfur-containing compounds, decaying food, dead cells, and bacterium that exist on the back of the tongue. There are more than 600 types of bacteria that inhabit the mouth, and many of these can cause high levels of foul odors. In addition, eating strong-smelling foods such as onions, garlic, and fish, smoking, and consuming alcohol can contribute to halitosis. Other less likely causes for bad breath include severe periodontal disease, acid reflux, and systemic diseases.
Keeping a consistent oral hygiene routine is essential to combating halitosis. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing can help dissipate bad breath, but the best way to rid yourself of it is to clean your tongue regularly with a tongue scraper. A scraper is designed to get the most oral debris off your tongue, although you can also scrub with a toothbrush or use the edge of a spoon.
If you find that you can't get rid of your bad breath through over-the-counter means, make an appointment with us. We can determine the cause of your halitosis, and offer an appropriate treatment plan.
