Anesthesia
Anesthesia Helps Patients Avoid Discomfort
Anesthesia is used, in various forms, to temporarily block pain. The different types of pain blockers are known as anesthetics. They can be topically applied, injected, or administered through an IV.
Topical anesthetics: A topical anesthetic is usually applied via a cotton swab to the area that needs numbing. Your dentist may use a topical anesthetic to prep your tooth for a restoration, such as putting on a crown.
Injectable anesthetics: Two commonly used injectable anesthetics are Novocain and Lidocaine. You may feel the slight pinch of the needle as it pierces your gum, but the medication works quickly. Your dentist may use and injectable anesthetic with procedures such as fillings and root canals.
General anesthetics: Some dentists offer general anesthesia, also called IV sedation, for patients who with a high degree of dental fear or the need to have multiple procedures at once. An anesthesiologist will give you the medicine. With general anesthesia, you fall asleep very fast and won't wake up until after your treatment is completed.
