Wisdom Teeth and Extractions

Why Your Tooth May Need to Be Extracted

Sometimes, due to the severity of the dental trauma or the failure of a restoration procedure, your tooth will need to be extracted. Most dentists will do everything to save the teeth of their patients. Tooth roots are vital to the health of jaw bone, it's always better to keep your teeth whenever possible.

However, the healthiest option may be to remove the troublesome tooth. In addition, many dentists will remove wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, especially since their late eruption can cause problems with your other permanent teeth.

If your teeth require extraction, then the procedure is fairly simple. The patient usually receives a topical numbing agent, or an injectable anesthetic. Once the tooth is removed, a dentist may give you a prescription for an antibiotic and after-care instructions that include applying cold compresses to the cheek nearest the extraction point.

More about Wisdom Teeth

Scientists have postulated that wisdom teeth are leftovers from when our ancestors needed the extra teeth to chew on the coarse, raw food of earlier times.

Many people experience problems from wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can crowd other teeth, create improper bites, and get infected. Sometimes, wisdom teeth only emerge partially, or not at all, and become impacted.

Impacted wisdom teeth often cause severe pain, and harm your oral health. They're difficult to brush and floss, which makes it easy for bacteria and food particles to become lodged inside and around the teeth. Many people get their wisdom teeth extracted to ensure that they don't have dental problems later on.
