Sealants
Protect Your Teeth from Decay with Dental Sealants
Anyone can benefit from dental sealants, which is a thin layer of plastic applied to the back molars. Sealants are generally used for children whose permanent teeth have recently erupted or for adults who have not had cavities.
The molars have pits and fissures where food and bacteria can become trapped and create decay and then eventually cavities. If the sealant is applied before decay begins to form, the teeth will be protected--for up to ten years.
How is a sealant applied? The tooth is cleaned and then briefly etched with an abrasive. This allows the sealant to adhere effectively. After the sealant is painted onto the molar, it's hardened with a special light. The process doesn't cause discomfort, and is typically completed in a short amount of time.
Even with sealants, proper oral hygiene, including using fluoride products, is still necessary to keep your teeth and gums healthy and disease-free.
