Cosmetic Bonding and Contouring

Cosmetic Bonding and Contouring Reshapes Your Smile

Cosmetic bonding and cosmetic contouring can alleviate several types of smile impairments - usually without the need for anesthesia. These procedures can be used to repair decayed or broken teeth, cover up enamel discolorations, or close up spaces.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding, also known as dental bonding, is a fairly simple way to correct minor tooth imperfections. The surface of the tooth being fixed is roughened (so that the bonding material sticks) and a conditioning liquid is applied. The bonding material is generally made of tooth-colored resin, which is a durable plastic substance. It's molded and smoothed into the desired shape.

An ultraviolet light or laser is then used to harden the material. The dentist may continue to shape and trim, and then polish the bonding material. When finished, the teeth that have been cosmetically bonded will look completely natural.

Cosmetic Contouring

Cosmetic or dental contouring, also called tooth reshaping, can rebuild your smile with little discomfort. This procedure can repair crooked, chipped, cracked, and overlapping teeth - sometimes in just one dental visit!

Cosmetic contouring is used to change the shape, length, and even the position of problematic teeth. How? The dentist starts by reducing the tooth enamel by just a few millimeters. Then he adds, and of course shapes, tooth-colored laminate to modify the existing teeth. Sometimes, dental contouring is used in conjunction with other procedures such as cosmetic bonding or porcelain veneers.
