Brushing, Flossing and Rinsing

Daily Oral Hygiene Gives You a Beautiful Smile

The best way to ensure your continued good oral health is to maintain a consistent dental hygiene routine. We recommend that you thoroughly brush your teeth - for at least two minutes - twice a day. Once you're done brushing, use a fluoride rinse. Floss daily to remove plaque from in - between teeth.

Brushing

Excellent brushing habits begin with using the most appropriate toothbrush. Your dentist can give you a good idea about what kind of toothbrush will work best for your dental healthcare routine. Generally, the bristles should be soft, nylon, and rounded. You don't want your toothbrush to scratch your teeth or irritate your gums.

There are many suggestions about the best way to brush your teeth. You can discuss recommendations with your dentist. The most important factor is to brush long enough to break up the bacteria colonies, and to brush often enough to keep them from forming tartar, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Flossing

According to The American Dental Association, only 12% of Americans floss daily! Along with brushing and rinsing, flossing is another key way to prevent dental health problems. If you're among the 88% of Americans that don't floss at least once every day, then you should start utilizing this oral hygiene tool today!

There are many types of floss, and which kind you decide to use isn't nearly as important as how you apply it. The American Dental Association recommends that you curve the floss against the side of the tooth in a "C" shape, and rub the floss gently up and down. Repeat this process on each tooth. You should floss at least once a day, which offers you additional protections against tooth decay and gum disease.

Rinsing

When looking for a good oral rinse, narrow your choices to those products that have received the ADA Seal. In order to get the American Dental Association's approval, mouthwashes have to meet a strict set of parameters. For example, companies must have data that confirms the rinse shows significant reduction of gingivitis and that plaque does not become resistant to the rinse.

You should use mouthwash after you brush at least twice a day. A rinse is not a substitute for brushing and flossing, but another tool in your arsenal to fight plaque and gum disease.

Additional Tips

Bacteria on the back of the tongue cause the majority of halitosis cases. The best way to clean your tongue is with a tongue cleaner or a scraper. These dental tools get the majority of bacteria, decaying food debris, fungi, and dead cells. Not only does scraping your tongue rid you of the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease, it also keeps your breath fresh.
